For many, Karen Abercrombie is known as Miss Clara – the wise and courageous praying woman from the film “War Room,” who inspired millions of viewers around the world with her faith and devotion to God. However, the story of the actress behind the character of Miss Clara is just as remarkable as the role itself. Her journey to faith, and then to one of the most significant roles in her career, was filled with periods of distance, waiting, surrender, and trust in God’s plan.
Karen recounts that she dedicated her life to Christ at the tender age of seven. In her family, however, faith was not strongly present. Her aunt Vine had a particularly profound influence on her, a woman who, according to Karen, was wholly devoted to God and conveyed Christ’s love to children through her ministry. It was from her that Karen received her first deep spiritual seeds. Yet, when she became a teenager, Karen drifted away from her faith. She abandoned the path she had walked as a child and began to live differently. She herself describes that period as a time when she was far from Christ.
Nevertheless, over time she realized something that, as she says, she will never forget: she could leave God, but God never left her. “I left, but He did not leave,” is the essence of her testimony. In her twenties, Karen returned to God once more. Instead of condemning her for the years spent away, God, as she testifies, welcomed her with open arms.
At the same time, Karen was seriously building her acting career. She worked hard, studied, and lived in an environment where success often demanded compromises. But it was precisely here that her faith began to influence her professional choices. Karen recounts that over the years she received various offers, but she didn’t accept them all. There were roles and content with which she simply could not align with her faith and the beliefs she held in her heart. Instead of pursuing her career at any cost, she chose to say “no” when she felt something was not in accordance with God. It was not easy.
While some of her contemporaries in Hollywood were advancing, landing major roles and becoming famous, Karen watched her career stagnate. She turned down roles when she felt she couldn’t honestly deliver the lines or portray the characters they required of her. Instead of immediately choosing a career at any cost, she decided to trust God, even when it meant financial uncertainty. From a human perspective, it might have seemed like she was missing her chance. But, as she would later realize, God wasn’t taking her opportunity away – He was preparing her for the right role.
When it was time to begin filming “War Room,” directors Alex and Stephen Kendrick struggled for a long time to find the right actress for the role of Miss Clara. After the traditional casting method yielded no results, the auditions were expanded, and the search reached out to local churches. Thus, the audition was held right in the church that Karen attended.
When she read the text about Miss Clara, she felt something unusual. As she later recounted, she could immediately sense the character and voice of the woman she was meant to bring to life on screen. She arrived at the audition prepared, and her interpretation left a strong impression. In the character of Miss Clara, Karen recognized something personal – fragments of her Aunt Vine, the woman who had planted the seed of faith in her heart since childhood.
And so, the role that seemed like just another acting opportunity became something much more for Karen. It was a chance to convey the message of prayer, faith, and trust in God through her talent.
Years later, Karen returned to the world of the Kendrick brothers through the film “The Forge.” In it, she revived the character of Miss Clara, marking her return to one of the roles that defined her career. The official description of the film presents “The Forge” as a new story from the creators of “War Room,” featuring familiar faces and a fresh perspective.
In an interview with Movieguide, Abercrombie spoke about the joy of working again with some of the old team from “War Room.” She particularly emphasized her love for collaborating with the Kendrick brothers and their authenticity in faith. For her, it was not just about filming again with familiar colleagues, but a return to an environment where faith is truly lived, even on set.
“The Forge” has a different focus than “War Room.” While “War Room” centered on the power of prayer, the new film explores spiritual mentorship and the impact a believer can have on the lives of the next generation. In the story, a young man lacking direction in life begins to change through a relationship with a person who introduces him deeper into faith and teaches him how to live as a follower of Christ. For Karen, reappearing as Miss Clara was yet another reminder that God can use a role far beyond what a person initially envisions.
Karen later admits that she herself continues to marvel at how God could use precisely her – a woman who was once far from Christ – to return and become part of a story that would carry the message of prayer and faith to millions of people. In a way, Miss Clara was not just a character from a film. She became part of her own personal testimony. The woman who teaches others to fight on their knees in “War Room” has gone through her own struggle in real life – a struggle to not abandon her convictions and to not trade her faith for professional success.
After the success of “War Room,” Karen did not allow fame to change her principles. She continues to carefully consider the projects she participates in and does not want to promote content that her faith and conscience cannot agree with. In one of her interviews, she emphasizes that she does not want to participate in anything that does not honor God.
For Karen Abercrombie, acting is no longer just a profession. She experiences her talent as a gift that belongs to God. And the journey to Miss Clara has shown her that sometimes the period in which it seems like nothing is happening can actually be the time when God is preparing the most important door. Karen’s story is not just a tale of a single film role.
It is a testimony of a person who strayed but returned; of a woman who refused to sacrifice her convictions for a career; and of a God who, according to her testimony, never ceased to work even when she could not see His plan.
