Two decades have passed since the release of The Passion of the Christ, directed by Mel Gibson, and the premiere of the film’s sequel is scheduled for the first half of 2027 – a film millions of viewers are eagerly expecting.
Exactly 22 years ago, the world was stunned by the film’s brutal and intense scenes, which felt authentic while also being the result of remarkable technical and artistic visual production. The film achieved record-breaking viewership, sold millions of copies, and generated enormous revenue. But few people knew that, while the film was being made, what some described as a real spiritual battle was unfolding on the set. In recent years, previously little – known details have begun to surface, along with numerous testimonies that have sparked widespread public interest.

The Strange Story Behind the Choice of the Lead Actor
Caviezel was exactly 33 years old when he accepted the role of Jesus – the same age at which Christ is traditionally believed to have been crucified. In addition, his initials are J.C. (James Caviezel), the same initials as Jesus Christ.
Shocking testimonies: While filming the Sermon on the Mount scene, Caviezel was reportedly struck directly by lightning.
“I saw fire coming out of my ears, and my whole body was illuminated,” Caviezel said in recent accounts. He also revealed that during one of the heart surgeries he underwent after filming, he actually died on the operating table – experiencing clinical death – and saw a light and felt an incredible sense of peace before being brought back to life.
“I was struck by lightning while hanging on the cross, and then I died during surgery. God didn’t want me to finish my mission there,” he said.
The lead actor endured brutal physical suffering, including cuts, hypothermia, and broken bones, and the fact that he survived was described as a true miracle.

During the scourging scene, one of the extras accidentally struck Caviezel with a real whip, leaving a 14-inch (35-centimeter) cut across his back. While carrying the 130-pound (60-kilogram) cross, he injured his shoulder, and because of the extreme cold in Matera, Italy, he suffered from severe hypothermia and pneumonia.
“My body was falling apart, but my spirit was stronger than anything,” the actor revealed.
Radical Changes Among the Actors
One of the most notable cases was that of actor Luca Lionello, who played Judas. He entered the project as a “fervent atheist,” but after filming the scenes, he was so deeply moved that he converted to Christianity. Later, his children were also baptized.
The same happened with the actor Pietro Sarubbi, who played Barabbas. He said that in the scene where his character looked at Jesus, there was no hatred in Caviezel’s eyes, but only mercy.

Numerous Healings
One of the most widely known testimonies concerns the healing of a six-year-old girl who suffered from a severe form of epilepsy and had experienced as many as 50 seizures a day since birth. During the premiere of the film, the girl was reportedly completely healed. The epileptic seizures did not return in the month following the premiere, and her overall health reportedly improved significantly.
Several people working behind the scenes also reportedly experienced healings, with some claiming that their vision and hearing, which had previously been impaired, suddenly returned.
Mysterious Figures
These figures were reportedly clearly visible with eye in some behind-the-scenes footage, yet completely disappeared from the film itself. Before the film’s premiere, it faced significant criticism and public pressure, with accusations that it was excessively brutal. Some believed that efforts were being made to prevent the film from reaching audiences and its message from being shared. Even the director reportedly said that higher spiritual forces were attempting to destroy the film before its release.
Nevertheless, the film was released and received by audiences as a powerful, transformative, and deeply moving experience, provoking strong reactions among believers around the world. It touched millions of people who were confronted with the depth of Jesus’ suffering. For many, the film brought the message of Scripture to life again and inspired them to deepen their faith and prayer.
